Living organisms represent one of nature's most fascinating demonstrations of open systems - entities that continuously exchange matter, energy, and information with their environment. Unlike closed systems that move toward maximum entropy, living things maintain remarkable order and complexity through these exchanges.
Living systems can anticipate future conditions based on past experiences
They can respond to complex patterns rather than just immediate stimuli
They can coordinate complex sequences of actions toward future goals
They can innovate new solutions by recombining existing capacities
This multi-scale integration gives rise to emergent properties that are not present at individual levels:
